It's all about the music.

At least that's what focus the Tecumseh High School Band of Braves is taking on right now.

Tecumseh High School competed this past Saturday at North Posey High School, taking third place.

"Each week we are trying to get better," said John Kendall, band director. "There were several aspects of the show that were better, but we still have to work on our music."

He said the marching is getting to a strong point, but the music is a step behind.

"So we are working on strengthening our music this week," Kendall said. "That was basically what we worked on last week."

He said the hard part about the show is that the band is playing several different styles of music, such as rock and swing. Each style has its own techniques that emphasizes that particular genre of music.

"(The band) is not interpreting it yet," he said. "They are just not communicating it the way we want them to."

The Band of Braves has its entire show on the field. However, the color guard is still learning the final routine of the show.

"North Posey went well," said Kendall. "We just didn't emphasize impact in the music. These contests are to prepare us for the post-season. That's what this is all about."

Tecumseh will take the field for competition at the Castle Invitational at 9:26 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, as well as at North High School Invitational - which will be at Central High School - at 5:26 p.m.

The Boonville Band of Gold didn't let a few dark storm clouds stop it from performing this past Saturday at Murray State University.

Assistant band director Dana Meyer said the Band of Gold placed second in class B and qualified for the finals in the evening.

"Right before we performed (for the finals), we saw a big cloud and heard thunder," she said. "There were a few sprinkles, but they went away. In the distance, there was lightning and as soon as we were done, got the uniforms on the semi and the kids on the bus… it was a torrential down pour. Bless their hearts, some of those parents (helping out) didn't have any extra clothing and had to ride back for three hours in wet clothes."

She said the band that performed after them was stopped after that band's show and told to run under some cover.

"For us, it wasn't really a bad day," said Meyer. "It just wasn't fun dealing with the weather issue."

She said comments from the judges affirmed some of the changes that the directors were wanting to make to the show.

The Band of Gold will perform at 8:39 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26 at the North High School Invitational.

Because this upcoming Saturday is the Castle High School Marching Band Invitational, assistant band director Faril Bunner said the Castle Marching Knights will focus on cleaning up the current show instead of adding more elements this week.

"We need to get these things ready for this weekend," he said.

This year's invitational, which is open to the public, will host 21 bands from southwestern Indiana. Admission is $5 for adults and concessions will be available. The first band takes the field at 9 a.m., with Castle marching in exhibition at 3:30 p.m.

The Knights will then take the field for competition at the North High School Invitational at 10:30 p.m.

"It's going to be a long day," said Bunner. "It will be a good challenge for us."
