FORT BRANCH - It's been two years in the making, but groundbreaking for Vincennes University's Gibson County Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Logistics will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Oct. 23, at the Fort Branch construction site.
The $5 million advanced manufacturing technology campus will be built at the southeast intersection of U.S. 41 and Coal Mine Road.
Vincennes University President Dick Helton said earlier this summer that funding is in place for the project and bids would be let in the fall.
Following groundbreaking, the project is on a 12-18 month construction schedule.
The 50,000 square foot building will offer industrial maintenance, robotics, computerized numeric controls, programmable logistics, computer, calculations and other industrial technology.
The Indiana Legislature funded the project in the spring of 2007, and Gov. Mitch Daniels endorsed the project in spite of state budget cutbacks in the summer of 2008.
To become reality, the project cleared the Indiana Commission on Higher Eucation and State Budget Committee last winter.
Local leaders also envision a technology and industrial park adjacent to the satellite campus. Under that concept, companies which decide to build in the park might get tax credits.
