The last two weeks have been good weeks for the Mt. Carmel High School golf program, Coach John White told the Mt. Carmel Boosters Wednesday.

"Last week we won the Regional, and this golf team may be the best in school history," he said. "We have great kids and they are all very talented."

White added that Mt. Carmel received many compliments when it hosted the Regional.

"Everyone was very happy with how things went and were handled," White added.

The coach expressed his appreciation to all those who had a part in the tournament.

All six Mt. Carmel golfers broke 80, the first time that has ever happened at a Regional. Then the team went on to the Sectional, played Monday, and five of the six players broke 80. Mt. Carmel also won the Sectional as a team and will now advance to the State Tournament in Bloomington.

The Sectional was held at the Rend Lake Golf Course, hosted by Benton. And the Aces defeated a very good Benton team to take the title. The match was close between the two teams, and the Aces won it on the last two holes. White said he was pleased with the Mt. Carmel fans that came to watch.

This is the second straight year for the Aces to advance to the State Tournament. They were to leave sometime today (Thursday) to practice. The tournament begins tomorrow (Friday) and will continue through Saturday.

There are only two seniors on the team, which means the program should be good for the next several years.

The Girls Golf Regional was also held at the Mt. Carmel course, and organized by Karin Kelsey. MCHS Athletic Director Doug Spear said she put in a great deal of time, as did Pro Shop Manager Rick Bobbitt and Course Supervisor Tim Woodsmall.

Ravyn Rodgers advanced out of the Regional as an individual and just missed, by two strokes, of advancing out of the Sectional, at Anna-Jonesboro on Tuesday, to the State Tournament.

Darrell Huey, an assistant coach with the Lady Aces tennis team, said the squad finished its regular season with an 8-1 victory over Carmi.

"This team finished with a 17-5 record and they certainly overachieved," he said.

Huey also noted the junior varsity team had a good season. He discussed each of the girls and how they played over the season.

"One thing that Head Coach Patty Bramlet and I saw was the improvement with all the girls as the season went on," Huey said.

He noted the seed meeting for Sectional, to be played this weekend in Carbondale, was held yesterday (Wednesday) in Carbondale. Huey said he hoped the Lady Aces would get good seeds.

Darren Peach, head coach of the Golden Aces football team, congratulated Coach White on the golf team's excellent season. After wishing Coach White and the team well during the trip to the State Tournament, Peach turned his attention to tomorrow (Friday) night's game against the Boonville Pioneers.

It will be both Homecoming and Senior Night for the Aces. The seniors will be introduced prior to the 6:30 p.m. start.

"The game against Boonville will have a Playoff atmosphere," he said. "The Pioneers come in at 7-1, and this game will decide Second Place in the Big Eight Conference."

"Boonville is very competitive and has several outstanding players. They have a fullback that runs very hard, and also plays defensive end. They have seven or eight kids that will go both ways, and they are skilled players," Peach said. "They have an excellent defensive line."

Peach also spoke about the Vincennes game, noting that his team came out flat. He said once it got going the team played well.

"I felt we ran the ball well, and the passing game was 'on' in this game. Injury-wise, everyone is getting healthy. I feel that all the starters will be ready to go Friday night. We want to end up playing well here at the end of the season and be ready for the State Playoffs," Peach said.

Spear also noted the Golden Aces soccer team won its Regional Tournament quarterfinal match against Vandalia Tuesday, 9-0, and now advances to play in the semifinal at 1 p.m. Saturday in Olney. He said the Lady Aces volleyball team would hold Senior Night tonight (Thursday).

Spear noted fall sports are winding down and winter sports will begin practice soon. He added repairs to the all-weather track are being made, especially on the southwest corner curve. Some hole have been repaired and the company will be back in a couple of weeks to reline the track.
